No understanding of Philadelphia could be complete without an exploration of the Society of Friends, or Quakers, who are such a significant part of the city's history. A great place to start is at the Arch Street Friends Meeting House, whose original structure was built in 1804 on a 2-acre lot given to the Philadelphia Quakers by William Penn in 1693. December 28: Coming in January - computer classes for job seekers

Beginning in January, the library will be offering four hands-on computer classes for job seekers. The classes are available through a grant from the New Jersey State Library and are aimed at improving individuals' ability to use computers during their job search.

Sessions will cover topics such as online job searching, resume writing, employment applications, along with familiarity in the key computer applications that go hand in hand with each topic (i.e. web search engines and Microsoft Word).

Every other month there is a lively, friendly, intelligent and often laughter-filled book discussion going on at the Moorestown Library and you are welcome to join us. We select titles based upon suggestions from the group and meet 6 times a year on the first Thursday every other month at 7 PM. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 5 and we will be discussing Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. If you need us to borrow a copy of this book for you from another library, just ask. We would be happy to.

Have you checked out our Book Groups in a Bag? Funded by our Friends of the Library, every year we select and purchase 10 book group kits. Each kit is a fabric bag filled with 10 copies of the same book, along with 10 copies each of discussion questions, author information and suggestions for other titles you might enjoy if you like this book. We select fiction and nonfiction, classics and contemporary titles. We now have 50 Book Groups in a Bag to choose from. You can check any bag out for up to two months.

Our latest community gallery artist is Moorestown resident Magalies Velez. Magalies was born in Voorhees and raised in Camden with five other siblings. She used her love of art and music to escape the harsh realities of her neighborhood and took summer art classes at the Walt Whitman Center for the Arts in Camden and Perkins Center here in Moorestown. She continued to take art classes at every opportunity through high school.

Her paintings will be on display at the library through the end of January.

Looking for a way to help out this holiday season? Stop by the library! We're a drop off point for a few great charities:

Deck the paws and help a collie: The Moorestown Sun is sponsoring its eighth annual campaign to make life more comfortable for animals at local shelters by collecting various pet, medical and office supplies. Through December 16.

Gift Tree: Take a tag and make a child's wish come true! A project of the Woman's Club of Moorestown in support of kids all around Burlington County. Gifts must be turned in, unwrapped, with the numbered tag by December 18.

Toys for Tots: Moorestown's Golden Eagle Band and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves are collecting new, unwrapped toys, games and puzzles to distribute to needy children in the community. Through December 23.

December 6: The annual Cooks Tour is tomorrow!

The annual event, sponsored by the Curtis Auxiliary of Virtua Memorial Hospital, tours five beautifully decorated homes in Moorestown. The tour attracts thousands of visitors to Moorestown each year.

This year's proceeds will benefit the Maternal Child Health Expansion at Virtua Memorial Hospital.

The College of Physicians has been promoting the science of medicine in Philadelphia since 1787 and tucked within the College is the fascinating and unusual Mutter Museum. Named for Thomas Mutter, a professor of surgery who donated his 2000 teaching specimens back in 1858, the Mutter Museum includes anatomical and patholigical specimens as well as scientific and medical memorabilia. that the library owns the complete Series 1 of Signing Time DVD's for children?

Signing Time DVDs will help you and your child learn basic American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary words in a way that's entertaining and fun. Each volume focuses on a topic such as fruits and vegetables or zoo animals and pairs the signs with fun songs for kids to enjoy.

November 16: Calling all teen artists!

This month, a Teen Art Wall space debuted in the Teen Area of the library. Come in and check it out!

To submit your art, just take it to the Children's Department and a staff member will post it to the Art Wall upon approval. Make sure to sign your art so you get credit for your masterpieces.

Keep in mind that your art should be respectful to library patrons, so please don't bother trying to submit anything that could be offensive. The library is not responsible for any damage done to the art once it is hung.

The next time you stop in at the library--look up! We are honored to be displaying S.T.E.M's beautiful open space banners, which have transformed our library into an inspiring gallery of originial art.

Since 1991, Save the Environment of Moorestown, (S.T.E.M.) has acknowledged every piece of open space it has preserved by commissioning a banner to commemorate it. The banners are created by local artists and each is a unique design.

This autumn the beautiful colors of nature are inside as well as out. Celebrate the wonder of nature courtesy of S.T.E.M.
